Dr. Michael D. Caldwell, MD, PhD

Michael D. Caldwell, MD, PhD., recently retired from a career as a general, vascular, and wound surgeon. He founded and directed the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Tissue Repair at the Marshfield Clinic, which served as a regional referral base for complex wounds. He is the former Director of Medical Research and developed the Personalized Medicine Research Project at the Marshfield Clinic, the nation's first population-based biobank for pharmacogenetic and genetic epidemiological research. Previously, he served for 10 years as a Professor of Surgery and Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. Before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, he was a Professor of Surgery at Brown University and acting Surgeon-in-Chief at The Rhode Island Hospital. While active at Brown University and the University of Minnesota, he maintained substantial NIH-funded research in wound metabolism and the phenotypic plasticity of wound inflammatory cells. He co-founded the Wound Healing Society and served as a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Surgical Society, and the Society of University Surgeons, among others.

Dr. Calwell received his BS in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Subsequently, he received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Caldwell completed his Surgical Internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. His Surgical Residency began at MUSC, completing his Surgical Residency and Chief Resident year at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a Neonatal Fellowship at MUSC, a Clinical Nutrition Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Vanderbilt University, as well as advanced Clinical Nutrition Fellowship at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Caldwell is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Nutrition and is certified in Hyperbaric Therapy and as a Physician Nutrition Specialist.

Dr. Caldwell’s research career is replete & vast, having published 120 manuscripts, editor of seven texts, author of 32 text chapters, and educated countless medical professional with over 350 podium presentations. He has acted as reviewer for 16 medical, surgical and basic science journals. His basic science & clinical research and research funding is robust and world class. He is an esteemed teacher & the recipient of innumerable academic and teaching awards.
